Our Origin Story

Meanwhile, somewhere in France…

In 2005, while living in a tout petite village of 500 people in Northern France, Christina first witnessed the wonder of a bread delivery truck. Every morning, a truck from a local bakery would drive through the village delivering fresh bread. Francoise, her french maman, would run to the curb to pick up fresh baguettes that they would enjoy all day long.

Fresh bread delivered to your door is hard to forget, so Christina always thought maybe she would pursue a similar idea at home.

Years later, after having two babies in 19 months, Christina found herself back with her hands in dough — using a sourdough starter that her bearded husband had cultivated while they were living in San Francisco.

As she churned out boules, she realized that her little toddler daughters would only eat the inside leaving piles of crust. So she set out to create a bread that would leave not a crumb behind. This is when she made her first honey oat sandwich loaf.

Originally, Christina just sold a few loaves to some momma friends but quickly the idea spread and soon she was delivering both pain de ville and sandwich loaves all over Capitol Hill, Anacostia, and Hillcrest. After four years of successful bread delivery, she and her family bought a 1998 Subaru Sambar from Japan. You can see it zipping around delivering everyday bread throughout the neighborhood.

She aspires to nourish her community physically and emotionally the way fresh bread in a tiny French village did for her.
